Chapter Ten

“Snow is really coming down out there,” Rusty said when he walked back inside.

Jane watched him pull off his coat after unwinding the scarf from around his neck. He’d fussed about wearing it, but she’d insisted if he was going to milk the cow and gather the eggs he had to wear it.

“Did you leave any of the milk there for the others?” Jane asked.

“Aaron and Mason met me out there to take their parts. It’s Aaron’s turn to milk and gather eggs tomorrow. I’ll meet them out there to get our part.” Rusty kicked off his boots and stretched. “I swear milking’s a lot harder than it looks.”

“That’s what I said. Poor Randi never got the hang of it. She gathers the eggs, but either Bryson or Mason ended up doing their turns for milking,” Jane told him.

“Where’s Jared?”

“He’s in the office talking to one of the outside ranches about the weather, I think,” she told him. “Tell him breakfast is going to be ready in another fifteen minutes.”

“Got it.”

Jane watched Rusty walk through to the living room. She was trying hard not to let Rusty know how much it hurt that Jared had pulled away from her some lately. He still talked to her and kissed her on the cheek, but there was a distance there now. It did hurt, but she refused to let it get to her. He needed space after she’d dropped the Love bomb on him. Since then she’d only told Rusty when they were alone. She hadn’t wanted to pressure Jared. Maybe she was wrong to do that, but she didn’t know what else to do. This was all new to her.

She quickly poured batter onto the griddle and began flipping pancakes for their breakfast. She’d already scrambled eggs to go with them, so once the men arrived, she’d have them spoon up what they wanted.

Jared showed up first. He sniffed and groaned. “Pancakes. Perfect for a day like today. The ranchers out on the north end say that we’re headed for even more tonight. They’re having a fucking blizzard out there.”

“I’m sure glad we’re in the house and have enough battery power from the solar panels for a few days,” she said.

“We’re set for three days without sun to recharge them. Even if that happens, we can stay warm with the fireplace. I just hate to use the wood unless we have to. Next year we’re going to cut a lot more in case this happens. Should have talked to the ranchers before now,” Jared said.

“None of us were prepared for living out this far from the other space station. Couldn’t have prepared for it no matter what we knew,” she said.

“Maybe.” Jared spooned up his eggs then took the top stack of pancakes before returning to the table.

Rusty walked in and made a big deal of inhaling. “Yum, yum. I’m starved.”

“Eggs are over there. I’ve just about got your first stack of pancakes ready,” she told him.

“I love pancakes. My family called them flapjacks though,” he said.
